Mitchell Tiger Families:
As many of you follow national and state news, there have been incidents involving tragic events on school campuses, one as close as Omaha. In addition to these events, the anniversary of 9/11 often invokes random acts of proposed violence, with one target being public schools. It is our understanding there have been several social media threats made throughout the nation. Some threats may have been localized to panhandle schools. It is no surprise as parents and concerned citizens, we grow increasingly anxious regarding the safety of our most precious asset, our children.
Please know we take the safety of our children and staff seriously every day at MPS. Safety is always on the forefront of our minds in all decisions made. When tragedies happen in other areas, whether in our state or across the nation, we analyze our own practices and procedures. We are in communication with local law enforcement often, officers visit with our students, and officers have recently conducted safety walk-thrus of our buildings. We believe in building solid relationships with students in order to create a safe culture both physically and emotionally.
There have been no threats through any source (social media, phone, etc.) made against Mitchell Public Schools or anyone associated with the district. We are aware of other districtsā situations near and far, and continue to follow all protocols and procedures to ensure a safe learning environment.
What we do ask all families and students is to remain vigilant and to communicate all potential risks with a trusted adult in the school or with law enforcement. āI was just kidding,ā can no longer be considered an excuse when it comes to school violence or unsafe behavior. If you see or hear something concerning, whether it be from a close friend or barely an acquaintance, do not hesitate to relay the information to an adult. Willingness to speak up can potentially prevent a bad situation or can even save a life.
Do not hesitate to call the building principals or Dr. Urbanek with any additional questions you may have. We are all committed to Mitchell students each and every day, and while we canāt guarantee the behaviors of others, we strive to do whatever we can to create the best possible environment for our students.
Respectfully,
Dr. Katherine Urbanek, Supt.
Mitchell Public Schools
